Leopard Award Presented to Dave Popejoy of  Purley Bury Bowling Club

To present a Leopard award, regarded as the highest honour in Surrey for club bowlers. It recognises the outstanding and distinguished service in administration and other bowling duties.

Dave Popejoy has conscientiously served Purley Bury in various capacities and never seeks personal accolades for the enormous amount of time effort or work he contributes to the club.

He is regularly seen supporting other members at working parties in maintaining and doing repairs to the clubhouse and its surroundings and co-helped in a team with the mowing of the green.

One of his many attributes is his organisational skills, organising events such as   varied social nights, theatre visits, Quiz nights, darts nights, the Christmas Afternoon and Evening Dinner. For the past 10 years Has coordinated the annual club tours.   In 2007 he successfully organised for 8 years Purley Bury’s very popular Invitation Open Triples Day.    He is also a co-founder and regular organiser of the Clubs Friday night triples league.  He has also drifted into other supporting rolls namely secretary of the East Surrey Bowls League, and during the winter chairman of the Croydon bowler’s darts league, not forgetting helping organise the Indoor Colin Hibbs and Spitfire Competitions.  He is a co-member of a group who actively promoted Purley Bury Culture Club for members to meet for regularly events during the winter months.

It would be amiss if it was not mentioned that his organisational skills have raised over £17,000 for Purley Bury club funds.

He regularly plays for the club and has had success winning his borough badge, club competitions, and just missed out qualifying for his county badge in the Triples.  He is also an associate member of the Surrey County Men’s Past President’s Association.

It is unquestionable that he is a great representative for Purley Bury and bowls, is extremely supportive of all activities and promotes the game and Purley Bury with a passion. Having joined the club in 2003 he has been Vice Captain in the years 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, then following on as Captain for 4 years in 2009 ,2010, 2013, 2014.   At present he is in his 3rd year as Club President.

This award recognises the significant achievements, contributions, and service over the years, He is truly a worthy recipient of this most prestigious award and I am privileged and honoured as President of Surrey County Bowling Association and as a friend to present this LEOPARD AWARD.
