HCL Match Report Vs Sussex at Croydon BC

Another day, another dollar as they say and another defeat, but a further opportunity to look at players, this time many who reached the final stages of the County Comps this year.  All acquitted themselves well, some impressed more than others, but  in the end as in many of our other games we lacked the quality of MC back end players over the last few ends where shots and some big scores were picked up, unfortunately not for us.  With 10 ends left we were only 1 shot down and we had momentum with us, but it wasn't to be.  All sides have fielded against us their maximum quota of 8 MC players while we only have 4 or 5 available and this to be honest is the difference in these games.  But as i have said it has given other players the chance to come in and try to impress.  We have one game left next Saturday against Berkshire at Croydon.

HCL Match Report Oxfordshire @ South Oxford BC 29/6/19

Any hopes we had of winning the HCL ended with this defeat at South Oxford on Saturday.  The game began well enough and after 5 ends we had 3 good winning rinks and the other 3 were doing ok but from then on we drifted a little and despite some good encouraging performances from some players Oxfordshire fielding a much stronger team ran out deserved winners by 18 points to 4.

Some of our players need reminding that should you apply and then confirm your availability for these Home County matches and then pull out it is then extremely hard to find so many replacements at such short notice and then expect them to travel such distances.

Next season the Home Counties is changing format in that Hampshire are joining so there will be 2 groups of 4 teams.  We are with Berkshire Sussex and Oxfordshire with the 2 group winners having a play off final. Thanks to all who played at South Oxford your efforts were much appreciated and despite the overall score like I said there were some good individual performances.

We have 2 games remaining both at Croydon against Sussex and Berkshire.

Thanks

Barrie

HCL Match Report Kent @Folkestone 25/5/19

For the second time in the Home Counties we travelled a long distance to come away with precious little in the way of points.  A match lost by only 6 shots resulting in 5 points taken out of a possible 22.  A strange match scoring wise, rink 1 went from strength to strength gaining momentum throughout the game, the 2 rinks on 2 and 6 were getting beaten but to their credit came back very strongly in the end.  But the 3 rinks that were all up early on struggled to hold on, one drawing one winning by only 2 shots and the other losing by 3 being level going into the last end.  This is where the game was lost.  It was also disappointing that only 7 who played last week were available for this game, we had several players who were unknown to each other at the start but i was greatly impressed with everyone's spirit and compatibility once the game had started.  Once again on the green everything was impressive apart from the final result.

Home Counties Match Report - Middlesex 18/05/19 played at Croydon

First the facts.  The points score was 18-4 and the overall score was 138-94.  By half time 3 rinks had built up good leads and they and the match score looked secure.  Without wanting to sound arrogant that looked to be 16 points in the bag.  The other 3 rinks were close all the way through and that's where the 'bonus' points were to be had.  We had to settle with one win and 2 narrow losses both by 2 shots.  Like last week such fine margins but a win by 44 shots and by 18-4 was more than satisfactory and bought the smiles back to our faces after last weeks disappointments.  To be honest Middlesex are a shadow of the team that they once were and are in the process of rebuilding but these games still have to be dealt with and won.  We ourselves had a much changed team, it's that time of year when players have to juggle their diaries and it is not always possible to be in 2 places at once.  But huge thanks and a well done to all who played.  This goes to show how many players we have in our County that are capable of playing at this level, even more important is the way we continue to play, our attitude and wanting to win was again very noticeable.  We now go to Folkestone in the next HCL next Saturday and play Kent again in the Balcombe on Sunday at Marden BC.

Home Counties Match Report - Buckinghamshire 11/5/19

The score of 5-17 was hardly a true reflection of the first HC match of the season away to Bucks at Aylesbury Town BC.  The green that looked good on arrival proved to be sluggish in pace meaning bowls needed to reach the head but anything over a yard or 2 in pace mostly sailed by, making it very hard for both sides to control.  It therefore meant that the front ends had to get there first and so it turned out on all rinks.  It was fair to say that it was the same for both teams.  It was.  That's why the score of 5-17 in such an even game was hard to take.  The overall score saw Bucks in front by 10 shots, but this was whittled away over the last 5 ends to be level with 2 ends remaining on one rink.  With us holding a very good 2 shots all looked safe until the opposing skip produced the shot of the day with a perfectly weighted draw to move the jack for a count of 3.  The one on the last end meant we lost the match by 2 shots although the overall points could suggest we lost by 30.  In truth this was a fair performance, I was pleased with the commitment and attitude shown by the players, some had travelled a long way to play in frustrating circumstances.
