The Home Counties Bowling Association Championships held at Croydon BC.

The Home Counties Bowling Association Championships were held on Sunday at Croydon BC and Surrey achieved success in the two singles championships played throughout the day.

In the Under-25 Singles competition Gareth McDonagh (Cheam BC) went straight into the semi-final where he beat Charlie Bell of Buckinghamshire 21 – 17. In the final he met George Schab of Oxfordshire who had previously beaten Scott Whiting of Kent in his semi-final. But Gareth romped away in the final and never looked back as he took the title by 21 – 8.

In the Singles, Surrey’s representative was Mark Bishopp (Weybridge) who beat Mark Charelett of Oxfordshire 21 – 17 in the quarter-final. In the semi-final he battled hard and beat Andy Smalldridge of Sussex 21 – 16 before meeting Middlesex’s Simon Jee in the final. Once again the Surrey player dominated the final against a talented opponent and took the title with a comprehensive 21 – 9 victory.

There was disappointment for Surrey in the Triples final however. Surrey were represented by Mick Gray, Mike Appleford and Gary Stevens (Cheam BC) and they could not have had a better start against a Kent team skipped by Steve Savage. Surrey were leading 16 – 3 after just 7 ends and looked to be coasting to a comfortable victory. However, as can happen in bowls, the wheels then fell off as their Kent rivals launched a spirited comeback. So much so that the Surrey team failed to score again mainly due to the Kent skip’s fine bowls and Kent ran out 17 – 16 winners in an extraordinary turnaround of fortunes.

However, Surrey must be happy with two titles and a finalist in these prestigious championships. Surrey also picked up over £300 in prize money for finishing second in the Senior Home Counties BA league (played throughout the season) and for the Under-25’s playing in the Junior league. A highly satisfactory conclusion to an above average season for the County.

Surrey & Southey BC Member Nathan Beeson carries off £1,500 Worthing Open Title

The first fully integrated and unified Worthing Open Tournament finished last weekend with the organisers claiming a really competitive but friendly atmosphere. Any worries that they had harboured before the event were quickly dispelled as they heard many comments about the friendliness and comradeship between the sexes for the entire fortnight.

The tournament still attracts a useful number of good bowlers and while the organisers would have liked to have seen more lady entrants there was, nevertheless, a significant number of them.

As you would have expected, there was a number of Surrey entries and some of them reached the later rounds and finals.

Chris Jones and Peter Hamilton from Epsom Park BC reached the final of the Pairs competition, just losing out to Gary and Adrian Snook from Hampshire.

The Fours competition was won by Malcolm Dare, Rex Moore, Rod Boyce and Peter Lines from Hampshire who beat a Middlesex four skipped by Ernie Rudston.

The Triples final again featured a Surrey entry but Steve Wessier, Ray Carey and Nathan Beeson from Southey BC just missed out 14 – 19 against David Hubbard, Marc Duson and David Cornwall from Sussex.

The ‘blue ribbon event’, the Worthing Unified Singles Championship, was won by Surrey member Nathan Beeson from Southey BC. He met David Moses from Sussex and won impressively by     21 – 12. I understand that the score belied the high standard of bowls played by both players but Nathan finished the stronger and walked away with the princely sum of £1,500, thought to be the highest purse of any open bowls tournament in the Country. David Moses won £600 as a losing finalist. Well done Nathan and all Surrey entries who reached the later rounds.

Bletchingley Bowler reaches London & Southern Counties Singles Final

Brian Rogers of Bletchingley BC has qualified to play in the final of London & Southern Counties 'Gold Badge' Singles competition. Along the way, in the quarter-final  Brian beat Simon Jee of Brondesbury BC who this year won the Middlesex County Singles title and has been a former winner of the National Singles title. In the semi-final he defeated Tim Mould from Connaught BC in Essex, who on two previous occasions has won the 'Gold Badge' title.

In the final of this prestigious competition his opponent was 18-year old Tom Bishop from the Atherley BC in Southampton. Tom won the Hampshire U-25 singles in 2008 but, sadly, there was no happy ending for Brian Rogers. Brian was defeated by 21 - 12 but the score did not reflect that it was a close fought final played in an excellent sporting spirit. Bad luck Brian.

Surrey County Bowling Association held their Mens Finals Day at Croydon BC last Thursday. Well over 300 spectators were treated to eight different finals, none of which were particularly close, but there was, nevertheless, some very good bowling.

The ‘blue ribbon’ event, the Open Singles, was expected to be a cliff-hanger between Mark Bishopp (Weybridge) and former England international Steve Tuohy (Egham). Tuohy was into his stride straight away scoring three doubles in quick succession. Thereafter Bishopp was trying to restrict his opponent but his form was not his best as Tuohy extended his lead with some excellent bowls. The result was never in doubt as Bishopp only won 4 ends and had to accept that he was outbowled by 21 – 7.

In the Junior (U-25) Singles last year’s champion Daniel Morris this year faced his Club colleague Gareth McDonagh. After ten ends the score was 8 – 9 in McDonagh’s favour but thereafter he took total control to become Cheam BC’s fifth different winner of this title in the 15 years this competition has been running. In that time the Club have also had 4 different finalists. McDonagh won by 22 – 11 as Morris only managed to win 6 of the nineteen ends played.

The Triples Championship between Phil Burge, Mike Appleford and Gary Stevens (Cheam) and Ted Barlow, Alistair Howick and Graham Vigor (Croydon) was one of the closer games of the day. Both teams were level after the half way mark (9 ends) but on the eleventh end Cheam pushed ahead by 14 – 13. But eight dropped shots over the next 3 ends cost them dear as Croydon, playing on their own green, ran out 23 – 18 winners.

Peter Staples (Croydon M.O.) comfortably beat Bob Pike (Colliers Wood) by 21 – 10 in the Secretaries Singles and in the Unbadged Singles Phil Gregory (South London) had the better of his opponent Kevin Crookes (Southey) as he won 22 – 14. The Champion of Champions Singles was a great disappointment as the experienced Dennis Hennessy (Southey) totally overwhelmed poor Jim Lacumber (Merton Park) 21 – 3.

There was great success for Sutton BC in the Fours Championship as their quartet of Neil Asten, Terry Buckland, Keith Adams and Steve Shanley overcame Roger Bell, Roy Spencer, Barry Martin and Steve Tuohy from Egham BC in the other close game with a 21 -17 win in the Fours final. And, finally, the Pairs final between Epsom Park and Weybridge proved that this sport is far from an old mans game. Both leads, Charles Bruder and Michael O’Leary are members of the Surrey Under-25 team and Michael, aged just 17, has become one of the youngest badged bowlers in the county. He linked up with father Jeff whose opposite number was current England International Ian Honnor. But the Weybridge pair triumphed by 22 – 14.
