Middleton Cup Team and
Squad 2010
Please see the Squad selected on the 'Middleton Cup'
page. But, before that, a message from the Team Manager
:
"The selection process for the Middleton Cup Squad
for 2010 has been an extremely difficult task this
season. Trying to fill the 28 positions has given the
Selectors a major headache.
The standard of bowling from the players over two trials
and a Senior Home Counties League match was high which
can only be a good thing for Surrey.
There was little to choose between players in many
instances which made selection complicated. As is always
the case in these circumstances, we have to make
decisions which will not be popular with some players,
however, the process was done fairly and on merit.
Inevitably, many players who believed they performed
well will be bitterly disappointed for not making the
Squad. These players will be given the opportunity to
play in the Senior Home Counties League matches which
will give the Selectors a further chance of assessing
their ability.
What was evident at the trials which included the
Middlesex Senior Home Counties match was the spirit of
the players and their determination, both of which we
need to be successful.
We achieved a flying start by beating Middlesex in the
league, winning by 6 shots and taking 16 points to
6, they won the league last year. It was followed by an
even more comprehensive victory over Oxfordshire, this
time by 20 shots and taking 21 points to 1. So it has
been a good start to the season, lets hope we continue
to perform well in our remaining matches."

Surrey CBA 104 ( 2
Pts. ) Kent CBA 125 ( 20 Pts. )
- HCL Match played at Shirley Park BC on Saturday
3 July 2010
After two good Senior Home Counties League results
earlier in the season, Surrey had hoped to continue
their run against local rivals Kent at Shirley Park BC
last Saturday. However, the match did not start well for
Surrey and after the 4th. and 8th.
ends found themselves 18 shots in arrears. They then
staged a revival and by the 14th. end took
the lead. At one point that stretched to a 16 shot lead
but, after the 17th end. disaster struck.
Quite how and why it happened was a mystery but over the
last 4 ends across the green (i.e. 24 ends) Surrey only
scored 8 shots while Kent amassed a remarkable 40.
Winning positions were squandered on several
rinks to the dismay of Team Manager Dave Candeland and
his selectors. By winning on only one rink Surrey scored
a paltry 2 points while Kent accumulated a healthy 20.
It has happened before and Surrey have to have a good
look at themselves particularly in the closing ends of a
match when concentration should be at its greatest.
Three matches remain in this league, one at home versus
Buckinghamshire and then two away trips to Sussex and
Berkshire. Vital improved performances will be expected
in these three matches.
